Law Students Gain Professional Insights

On Thursday 15 October eight students, currently studying Law at either UQ or QUT, attended an Academic Breakfast with Mr Ian Lockhart who is currently a partner at Minter Ellison. Ian is also an Old Cromwellian, having attended the College from 1986-1989. Ian spoke for just under an hour about his career progression and both the joys and challenges that practicing law has given him. He gave a very clear indication of what was required in order to acquire a job in what is a competitive job market.  Involvement in pro bono work, developing networks, broadening ones Curriculum Vitae, maintaining appropriate social media pages and a GPA of at least a 5.2 were all discussed as ways of assisting students to stand out at interview. Ian indicated the importance of being on top of applications for summer and winter clerkships at law firms since they are often the pipeline for graduates to gain future employment.
