We are delighted to announce that Xander Minzenmay, a third-year Cromwell resident, along with ten other outstanding students from the University of Queensland, has been awarded the prestigious New Colombo Plan (NCP) Scholarship for 2025. This remarkable achievement recognizes the academic excellence and commitment of these students to deepening their understanding of the Indo-Pacific region.

The NCP Scholarship, a signature initiative of the Australian Government, aims to strengthen Australia’s connections with the Indo-Pacific by supporting undergraduate students in studying, undertaking language training, and engaging in internships in the region. Xander will be embarking on an exciting journey to Singapore, a global hub for innovation and entrepreneurship.
A Transformative Experience Ahead
During his time in Singapore, Xander will:
- Study at Singapore Management University (SMU), taking courses in international trade law, global supply chains, operations strategy, and venture creation. These courses will provide a deep understanding of the business environment and align perfectly with his studies in international business and entrepreneurship.
- Intern with Temasek Trust, focusing on social impact investing. This internship will offer valuable insights into how business can drive positive change.
- Gain exposure to Singapore’s venture capital landscape through Menyala, a Temasek-backed firm. This exposure will provide a unique perspective on the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
- Undertake full-time Mandarin language studies to enhance cross-border communication skills and deepen his understanding of the region’s cultural nuances.
This comprehensive program will allow Xander to develop a well-rounded understanding of business dynamics in the Indo-Pacific while contributing to the NCP’s mission of strengthening regional ties.
UQ’s Success in the New Colombo Plan
The University of Queensland’s most successful and largest New Colombo Plan Scholar cohort to date was announced by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). All 11 shortlisted UQ students were awarded NCP Scholarships, demonstrating the university’s strong commitment to fostering global partnerships and providing international opportunities for its students.
“Exceptional applications from our 2025 NCP Scholarship recipients demonstrate both academic excellence and a strong alignment with the NCP program objective – to foster meaningful connections between Australia and the Indo-Pacific region,” said Katie Smith, the Senior Coordinator of the Sponsored Students Unit.
“NCP Scholars show an inspiring commitment to deepening their understanding of this vital and dynamic part of the world, and UQ is proud to support their journeys,” Katie Smith added.
A Bright Future Ahead
We are immensely proud of Xander and all the NCP Scholarship recipients from UQ. This achievement not only recognizes individual excellence but also contributes to building a diverse cohort of Australian alumni with deeper Indo-Pacific knowledge, capabilities, and connections.
