Spencer Howson talks radio

On Tuesday 11 March the College was privileged to have ABC broadcaster, journalist, writer and educator, Mr Spencer Howson, at our formal dinner.

Spencer spent 24 years at the ABC, where he presented over 14,000 hours of live daily talk radio. For 15 of those 24 years, he hosted the top-rating breakfast show at ABC Radio Brisbane. Last year, at the age of 44, he decided it was time for a change.

Spencer was born in England but has lived in Brisbane since 1979. He attended primary schools at Bald Hills, Toowong and Manly, did his High School education at Brisbane Grammar, and then studied journalism at QUT. He spoke to students regarding his entry into radio broadcasting, the changing nature of radio, its importance as a communication medium and the personal qualities he feels are essential for anyone seeking employment.

Spencer now writes a morning newsletter for Brisbane Times called “The Gateway” and teaches the radio stars of the future at the University of Southern Queensland.  Sign up for Spencer's daily email The Gateway here.
